Step by step to come to live in Spain being married(a) with Spanish(a)
February 8, 2017We created this post with a step by step to come to live in Spain being married(a) with Spanish(a), because many Internet users who visit our blog (thank you for visiting) have any questions on this matter and ask for us by e-mail or in blog comments, as've been through this and made this change to Spain, We write what you should do.
So come on, first to those who do not know, I'm a Christian Spanish citizenship Priscilla and my wife who together make this Blog does not have, but it is in the process, when we got citizenship but give tips.
We got married in Brazil, and legalize marriage in the Spanish consulate in São Paulo (the process is fast and simple, by what we saw made no difference to marry in Brazil or Spain, so do not know if married here it is easier or not, only I say that for us it was best ever we see married with the legalized marriage, because when we got here, Pri could already apply for resident and working document (Oh no, which is like the RNE in Brazil, an identity card for foreigners).
Important information and that the staff also has doubt is about the tourist visa, which to my knowledge not extending, only in some cases I've heard, but I did not research so I can not say exactly, then you have to leave for at least 3 months and return to extend and with this type of visa can not work legally here, you that is NOT European Union citizens can work legally only after you have the NIE (which can take more or less 2 take months to, so come with a backing of money to live in these first months).
Get a job being in Brazil is more difficult, than you living here, I got a job here after 4 months.
Like living in Spain, See the step by step:
- Married in Brazil;
- Legalize marriage at the consulate;
- Request a copy of Spanish registration of marriage in Spain's consulate (this document must be less than 3 month expedition, I recommend requesting a month or 15 days before travel, they do not accept documents over 3 months issued);
- You who are Spanish(a) You must take the Spanish birth certificate to get the DNI (The identity card) this certificate must be less than 3 month expedition, I recommend requesting a month or 15 days before travel, they do not accept documents over 3 month expedition);
- You who are Spanish(a) deve low consular request, ask this in the Spanish consulate in Brazil and say that is to make the DNI (this document must be less than 3 month expedition, I recommend requesting a month or 15 days before travel, because as I said they do not accept documents over 3 months issued);
- You who are the(a) Brazilian(a) You must apply for the birth certificate legalized (handout of the hague), all this is done in the office where your birth certificate(this document should be less than 3 month expedition, I recommend requesting a month or 15 days before travel, they do not accept documents over 3 issued months);
- Arriving in Spain do Empadronamiento (which is a record of where you are living in Spain) (this document must be less than 3 month expedition, I recommend requesting a month or 15 days before travel, they do not accept documents over 3 issued months);
- You who are Spanish(a) do the DNI;
- You who are the(a) Brazilian(a) get the NIE;
- After 1 year is with the NIE and living legally in Spain, you can apply for Spanish citizenship, we are in this step.

I have a doubt!! **actually there are several ** but without winding up too much… Rs
My wife has dual nationality _Romanian (EU)_ is Brasuca, we want to move to spain, I (Brassica) must I apply for a work visa before traveling? what do you think? My wife does not have the NIE in the EU, she must get the NIE at the consulate here in Brasa or in Spain? 🙂
Vcs. provide some kind of consultancy?
Hey Sandro,
You have to enter with a tourist visa. The work visa is only if you can get a job before entering.
She has to take the NIE in Spain. The consulate does not do NIE.
We are not just a tips blog.

Hello your post is very succinct, I really liked it.
I have only one question, my wife is Spanish and are moving to Spain in May, go to Catalonia. I already have a job commitment signed but have to get the NIE.
How do I get the NIE when you get? Just go in the National Police with quotes prior request?
hi Athie, this link has a step by step what you must do to request the NIE (https://turmundial.com.br/solicitar-nie-permissao-de-residencia-e/)
Hi Christian and Priscilla!
As the entry of you in Spain? Priscila entered as a tourist (presenting at the airport hotel voucher, return ticket, etc.) or you had the wedding registry and that was enough on immigration control?
My partner is Spanish and recently got married here in Spain. But, Force majeure issues (and because “appointment” to request the NIE gave me for June!) I will not be able to expect to finalize the processing. I travel to Brazil 3 days after submitting the request of the NIE. So I'm looking for some guidance on how I can get back into Spain, as already exhausted my 90 days as a tourist.
Grateful in advance for response!
Hi Julia, Priscilla entered the country with tourist visas. But your case is difirente it is already in the NIE process, it may be that they deem you a document that can be used in the back. This is good check with a Spanish Advisor.
Hello Christian, it's OK?
My husband is Spanish and I Brazilian. He is already waiting for me in Barcelona, and I was waiting for the marriage certificate and family book be ready. They are already ready and already have on hand. You can tell me that other documents will need to go through immigration at the airport when I arrive? The consulate is not knowing inform us properly and we are lost. It makes no sense to go as a tourist since I would have to prove ticket back to Brazil, of course?
I thank you very much for your attention!
To. Bruna
Hi Bruna, the other documents you have to bring more than being commented tourist or wife of Spanish is the travel insurance / insurance plan that is required in both cases. In our case Priscilla came as tourists and as we were together asked nothing, but may ask, and we had all inclusive ticket to another country. I know no other way to enter the country without being a tourist, For all residence documents will be requested after arrival, so my tip is to come as a tourist and commented these documents.
Oi Christian,
I'm going to Spain with my husband and my daughter. Both have citizenship and I'm going to have all the documents to reside legally. I bought my ticket back to 6 months. You think you should change the back to be entering as a tourist?
Thanks!
Oi Joana, can not think that the documents, more to get everything in order is best to have 3 months, anything you then changes back.
Hi, My husband has Italian citizenship and Italian passport, it is already in Spain, already has rented house and is already working with an employment contract for an indefinite period, already have the NIE also. My 3 daughters have Italian citizenship, but do not have passport, we will transfer the AIRE there to make them passport. Let's go there next week, My question is what to do first, getting there: or registrations, my permission, Oh no, o TIE, or AIR… I read your posts but I'm confused.
Hi Simone, the order is: empadronamento, NO solicitar, make TIE.
Hello! I wonder how his wife made in relation to the name. She changed the surname after marriage? For I brought any change in Brazil, but to go to the consulate informed me that Spain remains my maiden name. How should I proceed?
Oi Larissa, in Spain the name does not change, always will be the maiden name(a). In Brazil you have the last name of her husband, Spain will not.
Good afternoon.
I would love to know a little more . but I wanted to send the message by email. You answer . and can i help ?
Oi Suzana, please send your question to turmundial@gmail.com
Oi Christian! Super useful your tips. But I have a doubt. My partner has Spanish citizenship and we plan on moving to Spain. Only we are not married, we have a stable union… The union is accepted or we have to get married? Thanks!
Oi Nanci, yes it can be done as a stable union (girl here as a common-law couple)
Hello, I'm about to go to Spain with my Spanish husband and my children also have citizenship, I have the family book, will it be that with the restrictions for foreigners I can enter with them without having problems?
Hello edina, this is a complicated topic because information changes all the time, the last thing I saw was that married to Spaniards accompanied by their spouse, can enter spain. But I think you better confirm with the airline. Good luck and good trip.
