Wheels, the city of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of 7 the ancient world wonders
September 13, 2017Surely you have heard of Rhodes and Rhodes, might not remember, pull the memory of their history lessons…but what's important in this Greek Island? There was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world the Colossus of Rhodes, remembered?
We went there on a trip we did cruise to the Greek islands, we leave Athens towards the Islands Mykonos, Chalk, Patmos Island, Rhodes and Santorini, were 8 days and 7 travel nights, has been a dream come true, for long we wanted to make this trip.
The ship arrived early in Rhodes Island and docked at the island port, in some islands the ship is anchored in the sea and go to the city have to take a boat, when it brings much better because we can already leave early to know the Island.
In other Islands tourist attractions are far from the port, but not in Rhodes, the main attractions are very close to the port and everything can be done on foot, so we did, we left early and went for a walk.
What to do in Rhodes? And what are the main tourist attractions of Rhodes Island?
Our first destination was soon know Colossus of Rhodes, but rather on the way, has the ancient city walls of Rhodes, which also gives the name to Island, these walls are very well preserved and protected the medieval city which was very important because of its location in the middle of the Aegean towards the Middle East.
The medieval city walls are in front of the port, so we were already strolling through them, on the way to the Colossus of Rhodes, we passed by Tower Naillac one of the ends of wall.
Soon after we passed by Windmills Rhodes, which is in the port, between the port of cruise ships and the port of fishermen boats and sailboats.
At the edge of this part of the harbor is the With St. Nicholas that protected the entrance to the port of Rhodes.
But the coolest thing is that right next door was the Colossus of Rhodes, a giant statue made entirely of bronze, God Titan Sun of Greek mythology, Its construction was made in 280 B.C and had 33 meters high, the same size as the Statue of Liberty in the United States.
O Colossus of Rhodes It was destroyed by an earthquake in the year 226 a.C, and crashed into the sea, today only left the two towers that held the legs of the statue and the top of each tower has a deer on one side a male and the other a female.
Some historians say that this is not the right place, but as we do not know, we only know what everyone thinks, that the statue stood there with open legs and beneath them was the harbor entrance.
Soon after we were in another part of the port where is the other tower that signals the other foot of the statue of the Colossus.
We found it very cool to visit places like this that has so much history that we study in school, in classes on Greece old, on Greek mythology, finally a magical place.
In the same region has other attractions to visit, like Mandraki market and the igreja Ekklisia Evaggelismos.
The church is in front of another tower of the Colossus of Rhodes.
Continuing our tour, we went to one of Rhodes beaches, Beach Elli Beach, it is cute, but nothing to do with those pictures of Greece beaches, those beaches are in other islands like Mykonos, Crete and Patmos, we stood on the beach enjoying the intense heat that is in Greece during the summer, there is very very hot, We got to get 40 degrees, without doubt one of the hottest countries in Europe.
After enjoying the beach for longer hours, we know the part of the medieval city inside the wall, which before we had passed out..
Inside there are parts which are well preserved around the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes visitable, as we had little time in the city only we saw out, It is very beautiful.
These medieval streets also found the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes.
What surprises, It is that inside the walls also has a mosque, call Suleiman.
The ideal here is to walk through all the alleys, as each has its charm, and you will discover more things like Old Town Castle, a castle still in the middle of the medieval town and can also be visited.
In this part of town it is good to leave enough time to get to know every corner, and if you have time to give a full turn out of the wall, it is very pretty and full of gardens.
Then there was time to return to the ship and go to the next stop, Santorini Island, at sea we saw another beautiful sunset.
